Hi,
I'm after the translation/meaning of Rakino into English.
I'm an Auckland lad getting married to my English girl here in the UK on September 4, all the tables are being named after islands in the Hauraki Gulf and I'm writing up a short biography on each island - which I'm trying to include the Maori meanings for but I've got stuck with Rakino, and for that matter The Noises - any idea about Rakino's meaning and also how the Noises got their name?
I'd be grateful if you could help me out!

Sorry for the delay but I have been on Rakino myself and as such haven't been on the internet.
The meaning of Rakino isn't entirely clear:
Ra = sun
kino= black
So make what you will of that… be it an eclipse or just a bad day…
As to the Noises, I would hazard that the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks was the origin of their name, though I am sure you could come up with some sort of tale of strange noises emanating from the islands...
